Birkenhead college forges partnership with Chinese university

A specialist sixth form college in Wirral has formed a partnership with a Chinese university.

The Sixth Form College in Birkenhead has signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ with Soochow University High School in Suzhou, eastern China, according to the Wirral Globe.

Its principal Kathryn Podmore recently made a trip to China and wants to build links and create learning opportunities for staff and students alike in both Wirral and China.

The college has recently started offering Mandarin as part of its curriculum and plans to establish summer school links in China from July.

Mrs Podmore said the ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ was an exciting long-term opportunity for the college, its students and staff.

“This partnership will enable us to develop a student/teacher exchange programme which will enhance the education of our young people and allow them to immerse themselves in a different culture and language.”

She added China was an “important economic centre” and was looking forward to promoting the excellent commercial and educational opportunities Wirral and the north-west could offer.

Guests from Soochow University will be visiting the college in March and Mrs Podmore said she looked forward to reciprocating the impeccable hospitality she had received on her visit.
