Newmarket College helps to boost morale of overseas soldiers

Young people studying at Newmarket College have started a new pen pal scheme with members of the armed forces serving in Afghanistan.

The students contacted a Newmarket College alumni now serving with 2 Tactical Provost Squadron in the country and are now sending him and his comrades letters and parcels – which contain things like sweets and toiletries donated by staff.

Originally, the youngsters wrote about what had been happening at the college and they were preparing for an upcoming sports day. They then received a reply from members of the squadron, saying how their efforts had been keeping up morale.

Teaching assistant Ceri Williams, who came up with idea of sending the letters, said: “They wrote to students about their daily life as force protection at Camp Bastion.”

She added that the note signed off by asking them to keep in touch, as they were keen to know who had won sports day.

Newmarket College has also recently opened a Sea Cadet unit, where people aged between ten and 18 can take part in activities ranging from rock climbing to kayaking – with each session costing them £2.
