Hills Road Sixth Form College has been named Sunday Times State Sixth Form College of the Year 2013.

The college in Cambridge, which has 2,000 full-time students, was praised for its wide choice of A-levels and extra-curricular activities available.

The Sunday Times used the number of students at each college achieving AAB or higher at A-level in certain subjects to rank the colleges. The chosen subjects are ones which Russell Group universities state give students the best chance of being offered a place at university; English, Maths, Science, History, Geography and Languages.

Linda Sinclair, college principal, said that this was a remarkable achievement. “I am delighted that the considerable talents of students, staff and governors have been recognised in this way.”

The college was also commended for its strong community ethos and the passion for learning demonstrated by staff and students alike.

In addition, the school has sent an average of 65 students a year to Oxbridge in the last six years, according to Ms Sinclair. She said: “Students are encouraged to think about applying [to Oxbridge] because they see others applying successfully, and they see that the support is there for them.”
