Students should seek contents insurance

Those worried about student finances might be wise to protect their belongings while at university or college.

New figures from Nationwide show that while two-fifths of young people take more than £500 worth of items with them to university, most are more concerned with making friends and joining social clubs than taking out contents insurance.

Head of general insurance John Baker explained that it is essential that those concerned about student finances guard against the threat of having to replace stolen or lost items on their own.

"Unfortunately, the statistics show that around 15 per cent of students have experienced something being stolen from them while they were at university," he said.

The expert added that this fact illustrates how students should not ignore the need for contents insurance.

"This is something that students should take account of [and] should do something about, so that if something does happen to them they are adequately protected."
