Merger of city colleges will create new large Edinburgh college

Wed, 27 Apr 2011

The planned merger of two Edinburgh colleges, Stevenson and Jewel and Esk, will create the second largest college in Scotland and one of the biggest in the UK, it has emerged. The merged colleges will teach about 20,000 students between them.

The plan to have an Edinburgh city region college is expected to come to fruition next summer, and the combined colleges hope to offer an improved service of further education in the capital, as well as contributing over GBP100 million per year to the economy. It was believed that the merger would include the third college in Edinburgh, Telford, but this was ruled out as it failed to gain sufficient support.

The merger has been agreed in principle by the boards of management of each college, and will make the new institution one of the top 20 colleges in the UK based on turnover.

Brian Lister, principal at Stevenson College, commented "This is about opportunity and creating an organisation on a larger scale, delivering an even better service to students across the city."

Mandy Exley, principal of Jewel &Esk, also stated "Together, what we can offer is much stronger – and will allow us to bring in additional income at a time when government grants are under pressure."
