College announces that it is doubling tuition fees

Thu, 28 Apr 2011

The announcement that the management of Bradford College have decided to increase tuition fees by more than double, from GBP3,250 to GBP6,700, has come under criticism. The college, one of the biggest in the country, will impose the fees hike from 2012, subject to government approval.

It has been claimed that the decision has been due to the college being more like a university because of the amount of higher education courses it offers.

Bradford College have argued that it is able to charge a level of fees that are lower than most universities and also deliver a high quality of higher education since it operates efficiently and has less overheads and a lower level of funding historically.

David Smith, dean of higher education at Bradford College, commented "Bradford College’s higher education courses tend to have a vocational and professional emphasis and are often designed with the direct input of employers."

He added "The College typically provides a higher number of teaching hours than the higher education sector average. It also provides excellent levels of tutor access and support, class sizes that are below the sector average and attracts predominantly local students who are often the first in their family to study at higher education level."
