Wiltshire College is making cutbacks to three of its adult education centres in a move that demonstrates the impact that the government funding cuts is likely to have on students of all ages, not just young undergraduate university students . The adult learning centres in Calne, Melksham and Westbury are all being closed, while the catering operation in Chippenham will also be culled as the College looks to make savings of £1.5 million. A number of the colleges IT centres will also be closed, with a total of 20 jobs expected to be lost as teachers and admin staff are no longer needed. Special arrangements will be made for students currently enrolled on courses at the closing centres.
Student numbers have been falling at the IT centres in recent years, making the Colleges services vulnerable to government cutbacks. The £1.5 million savings correlate to the size of the government reduction in funding to the college, and while the most recent cuts were decided prior to the governments announcement of £6.2 billion cuts, the move is illustrative of the types of cutbacks that are going to be required as the government looks to reduce spending and decrease the deficit.
