As many as 100 Barnet College staff are expected to lose their jobs after the colleges budget was cut by more than £3 million. The decision from the Learning and Skills Council will apply to the 2010/11 academic year commencing August 1st, and is likely to mean that some teachers will lose their jobs, as well as many administrative staff.
Education Secretary Ed Balls plans to save £1 billion by 2013 as the government looks to improve its financial position. While the government will insist the cut is borne out of necessity, that argument doesnt sit well with Barnet College principal Marilyn Hawkins, who claims the cut will have a detrimental effect on the community, as the college is forced to remove high quality courses from its range of offerings to students old and young. The College has seen a rise in the number of applications from older adults, as people look to gain qualifications .
While it has been speculated that the decision could be influenced by the result of the election, Ms Hawkins dispelled such notions, saying she didnt expect a possible change of Government to have any effect.
