The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) has hit out at plans for a super college in Glasgow, claiming the construction of the new college would actually reduce the number of places for students in Scotland. Plans for a City of Glasgow College would see the Central, Metropolitan and Glasgow Nautical Colleges merge, with a £300 million New Campus Glasgow also proposed. Those behind the project claim it would increase the number of places for pupils .
However, the EIS teaching union has hit out at the educational rationale behind the college, and has called for the Scottish Education Secretary Mike Russell to withhold approval of the merger until it is clear that the merger would benefit Scottish students.
The EIS also raised concerns at the prospects of redundancies following any merger, with teachers and staffs fearful of compulsory redundancies if a merger were to go ahead. In the event of a merger being agreed, the EIS also wants Stow College to be included.
Principal Designate for the City of Glasgow College, Paul Little, has refuted the claims, however, insisting that there are clear benefits from a merger and that no redundancies would be made.
