The College of West Anglia has announced it is to axe its graphic design course owing to nationwide restrictions on university recruitment . The college previously offered students the chance to study a Higher Education Diploma in graphic design at the colleges Isle Campus in Wisbech, but claims the course is no longer financially feasible owing to restrictions which inhibit it from recruiting enough students.
The decision has attracted criticism from existing pupils, who claim it will harm the prospects of aspiring graphic designers . To demonstrate their opposition to the decision, the students held an exhibition at The Boathouse to showcase their work and highlight the opportunities that would no longer be available to future students.
Though existing students feel strongly about continuing the course, there are just eight students enrolled on the latest year of the course, and just five students the year before. Teachers will be kept on to ensure that existing students can finish their courses, but no new students will be admitted. The case of the College of West Anglia is by no means an exception in the UK at the moment, with the government cuts affecting schools, colleges and universities across the country.
