The BBP College of Professional Studies is to become BBP University College, thereby becoming the UKs first private sector university college in over 30 years. The news was announced by David Willetts, the minister of state for universities, science and skills, and comes three years after BPP became the UKs first privately owned company to be given degree-awarding powers.
Not since 1976 when Buckingham University College was established has a private institution been awarded the University College title in the UK. Mr Willetts commented that the contribution of the private sector will be to work alongside traditional universities rather than to replace them, while he also claimed that the international experience boasted by BPP will help to provide a more diverse range of higher education .
BPP already offers an undergraduate law degree which attracted 100 students in its first year. The institution, which also offers postgraduate law conversion courses, has long since held an ambition to become a fully fledged university, though the SEC investigation into alleged accounting irregularities at BPPs US parent Apollo Group threatened to derail the progress of the institution.
