Oxford University students are hosting a convention on climate change mirroring that of the recent UN Climate Change summit in Copenhagen . The Oxford Climate Forum will host students from more than 20 universities, with a total of 100 students tasked with coming up with campaign plans.
Organisers hope the forum will encourage university student unions to tackle climate change, helping to elevate it to the top of the agenda in politics and business across the UK. It is also hoped that the local community will show an interest in becoming involved in climate issues.
21 year old student Sophie Lewis from Wadham College is one of those involved. Ms Lewis claims to have been attacked by riots police while visiting the Climate Change summit in Copenhagen, and hopes that the Oxford Climate Forum is not another talking shop.
Forum director Julia Koskella from Somerville College hopes the Forum can propel climate change to being a pivotal issue in this years general election, and hopes to set up an online network to help students wanting to tackle climate issues to stay in touch.
The two day event will be opened by renowned sociologist Lord Anthony Giddens, and will start on Friday February 12th at Oxford University .
