The National Star College in Cheltenham has had an incredible start to its fundraising appeal. The College has appealed to Gloucestershire residents and companies to help raise half of the £3 million needed to build high quality facilities for its students at the Ullenwood site. That plea appears to have hit home, after the Cirencester based St Jamess Place Foundation made a donation of £656,000 the largest donation in the colleges history.
Helen Sexton, chief executive and principal at the college, joined teachers in voicing her appreciated for the donation, which is required after the Learning and Skills Council backtracked on their pledge to contribute £6 million to a £15 million redevelopment programme last year. Having already started redevelopment work, the college decided to seek alternative sources of income.
The £3 million injection will help to pay for a new student residence to help accommodate pupils with severe and complex disabilities. There will also be a new therapy centre with hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and sensory rooms to assist the development of the handicapped pupils, while the community and work related centre will be available to disabled people and professionals throughout Gloucestershire.
