Mature students in the Wigan area have breathed a sigh of relief after the head of Wigan and Leigh College announced that there would be no reduction in the number of adult places in 2010/11. Wigan and Leigh is one of a vast number of colleges to have its budget cut for adult learning courses . With the government looking to make cutbacks, £500,000 has been cut from the colleges mature student budget for the upcoming academic year.
Despite this severe cut, the college has announced that it has found enough money through efficiency savings to preserve numbers on its adult learning courses. The news comes as a huge relief to many residents in the surrounding area, with record numbers expected to apply for places on the adult learning courses this year.
Adult learners are a big part of Wigan and Leigh College, with 10,000 mature students enrolled, compared to just 4,000 16-18 year olds. The college claims that the efficiency savings it has made will not harm the quality of education provided by teachers, but is encouraging both 16-19 year olds and mature students to enrol early to secure a place.
