Study Findings Give College Leavers Hope

Tue, 03 Aug 2010

A survey by jobs website Career Builder has found that just under a quarter of British companies are looking to take on college leavers in a full time or part time capacity in the next year. 106 companies were questioned as part of the study, and despite the attention placed on the importance of having a university degree, the findings provide some relatively encouraging news for college leavers.

College students will be pleased to hear that two-thirds of those who anticipate taking on college leavers are willing to pay a salary of between £20,000 and £30,000, while 6 per cent would be willing to pay more for the right candidate. On a less optimistic note for school and college pupils, however, half of the employers in question would expect to pay less than £20,000 to college leavers starting full- or part-time vacancies.

At a time when there is such fierce competition for jobs for those coming out of education, the study was also useful in highlighting the skills which employers feel are lacking in candidates. 3 in 10 employers felt applicants lacked communication skills, while a further 3 in 10 felt there was an absence of critical thinking skills.
