Staff at Great Yarmouth College are fearing for their jobs after its principal Robin Parkinson conceded there would need to be job cuts as a result of a funding cut. Mr Parkinson revealed to staff in a meeting this week that the college was facing a funding deficit of around £1 million this year, meaning that as many as 50 full time jobs would have to be cut around one eighth of the colleges workforce.
Students will be concerned at the impact the job cuts may have on class sizes, as it is not known how many of the job cuts may affect staff. College spokesman Mark Bayley said the college hoped to keep as many courses available as possible, and reassured existing pupils that they will all be able to complete the courses they are currently on. There will be a 30 day consultation period regarding the redundancies .
The cut comes as part of the governments £200 million reduction in funding for mature education and adult learning courses at colleges and universities across the country. Government funded schools are also having to make cutbacks as the economic downturn takes its toll.
