South Devon College has been forced to abandon plans for a £23 million development after failing to secure the necessary funding. The governors have instead opted to proceed with an £8 million expansion, after failing to secure the extra £15 million from the Learning and Skills Council. The Higher Education Funding Council for England has provided the bulk of the funding, with a £3.2 million donation, with a further £1 million from Adult Safeguarded Learning . The South West Regional Development Agency have provided £800,000 of funding, and the college is borrowing the remaining £3 million.
The colleges new higher level skills centre is expected to be ready for degree level students in one year, with work only just beginning. The chairman of governors, Vince Flower, and the new college principle, Stephen Criddle, dug up the first turf yesterday. The new building will host the colleges adult and community education department, and will prove a valuable addition to the colleges facilities, commented Mayor Nick Bye.
After the funding controversy surrounding the Learning and Skills Council, little funding is expected to be provided by its successor. The college continues to look for alternative sources of funding but is not expecting to find £15 million soon.
