A North Staffordshire college is attracting record numbers of sixth formers following significant expansion in the past decade. St Josephs College in Trent Vale has doubled in size in the past 10 years, and has welcomed 210 teenagers to its sixth form this term. Half of these pupils have left their secondary schools to join St Josephs, with more than 25 different high schools represented among the pupils. Having completed their GCSEs, a number of pupils have left independent schools to rejoin the state sector for their A-levels with many hoping to go on to university .
The record intake means St Josephs has more than 1,000 pupils for the first time, compared with 490 just 11 years ago. Headtacher Roisin Maguire cited the colleges excellent sixth from results as a major factor in attracting such high numbers, and put the increasing number of pupils down to word of mouth. New students at the school confirmed that it was the schools reputation which had convinced them to join.
Despite its vast expansion in the past decade, some students have voiced concerns that the school will no longer be able to cope with the numbers. One pupil commented that the canteen was always full and called on the school to expand it.
