College Reports Increase in Overseas Language Students

Tue, 08 Sep 2009

A University of London college has bucked the trend of the global recession after language school operator ISIS announcing a 20 per cent increase in the number of overseas language school students . Around 1,700 students came to learn English at Egham’s Royal Holloway from countries including France, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Romania, Russia, Spain and Taiwan . With the college’s resident students on their summer holidays, the foreign students come for two or three week language courses .

Language school operators across the world have seen fewer applications for their courses, particularly from overseas students who may be struggling to afford the cost of the course or the expense of getting there.

Director of ISIS, David Brown, believes that Royal Holloway’s location gives it an advantage over most language schools, offering students the chance to see nearby Brighton, London, Oxford or Windsor when they are not studying. Mr Brown also lauded the first class accommodation and 135 acre site with excellent sporting facilities and lecture facilities as factors in attracting large numbers of overseas students.

The revelation follows the news that the level of English language knowledge is rising in much of Europe, with the Czech Republic reporting a 30 per cent increase in the last five years in the number of students receiving the Cambridge English Language Qualification.
