As many as 50 pupils at South Cheshire College have benefitted from the new Mayors Learning Fund. The fund was set up by former Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich Brian Silvester, who used to be a student at the college . Mr Silvester is now the deputy leader of Cheshire East Council, and donated £5,000 to the college in the summer to help students with the cost of further education . College principal Peter Swift matched the donation, swelling the fund to £10,000.
Grants of up to £200 have been handed out to pupils at the college, helping them to fund a wide range of courses. Students have welcomed the cash, saying it has helped them to pay course fees and transport costs, as well as for materials for their study programmes. Clr Silvester said he hoped his Lifelong Learning fund would help local people achieve their ambitions.
It isnt just young students who have benefitted from the fund. 59 year old mature student Dave Graham voiced his delight at the fund, saying it had helped him to stay on at college for another year while helping him to secure part time work in the restaurant business.
