The Government had given Barnet College £80,000 as part of the Learning for Pleasure programme designed to encourage adult learning in the community. The programme is run by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (DBIS), who organise creative and cultural activities to help fund the teaching of mature students in disadvantaged communities. There are a range of activities, including food street festivals and writers workshops.
The project will target those in Barnet who did not have access to formal learning, and will be run by the college in conjunction with Barnet Council, Barnet Voluntary Service Council, Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute of Education and The Jewish Association for the Mentally Ill. Some formal school subjects will be taught such as maths, though the overall aim is to improve the skills of the individuals and help create opportunities for them.
A total of 1,400 associations, colleges and institutions applied for the grant, with 213 lucky recipients. The funding is part of the governments £20 million Transformation Fund aimed at boosting the number of informal adult learning projects in the UK. Susanne Stent, Barnet College Director of Adult Learning and Skills for Life said she hoped the scheme would instil a sense of pride among local residents.
