Pupils at a school in Wednesbury have been banned from cycling to lessons. The ban has arisen out of a fear amongst staff that there is a danger of the students being knocked down or injured. Pupils may no longer bring their bikes onto the Wodensborough Community Technology College site, as staff believe there are a number of locations on the school grounds where the students are particularly vulnerable.
Ken Ellis, head teacher of the school, said the ban was being imposed reluctantly on health and safety grounds. Mr Ellis said the ban was necessary as there is a narrow driveway into the school used by over 100 cars, minibuses and taxis which would leave student cyclists vulnerable.
Local councillor Mavis Hughes branded the ban ludicrous, and lamented the impact the ban will have on the councils efforts to get young pupils fit and active. Councillor Hughes also revealed that at least two youngsters have had their bicycles stolen despite chaining them up outside the college on Hydes Road. The school has recommended that pupils leave their bikes at the houses of friends or family who live nearby.
