A Cambridge University college has begun an appeal to raise £12 million on its 50th anniversary . Churchill College was founded by Sir Winston Churchill in 1959, with a view to creating a science and technology institution capable of rivalling the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its reputation as a leading faculty in the discipline was established as First Master John Cockcroft split the atom while Founding Fellow Francis Crick helped to discover the structure of DNA. Since its creation, 24 members of the college have won Nobel Prizes.
The money the college hopes to raise will fund undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and enable the college to improve student lodgings. £8 million of the money would fund New Court, which would offer a home to 60 students, helping to reduce the stress on the centre of campus. A further £4 million would be used for studentships, which Sir David Wallace, Master of the College, says are vital needs.
When the educational college was founded, it received no state funding but was instead funded by private donations. The college are hoping for similar generosity 50 years on.
